Hooters Owls, 2001
Various Hooters Locations
Austin, Dallas, Houston, Waco, San Antonio, Texas
The first three finished hooter owls seen here are ready for their final gel coat, which is a protective fiberglass finish which can withstand the outdoor elements and is typically used on boats. The hooter owl was chosen by the artist to represent the majestic great horned owl. These fiberglass owls stand at 10' tall by 4 1/2' at the base. Hooters has placed these owls in various locations around Texas.
Artist, Beverly Hill Smith, out of Houston, Texas carved the form out of urethane foam in sections. Once carved, the foam sections are placed together to insure they fit properly before shipping to the fiberglass fabricator to create the mold and finally cast of the forms. Here the urethane form has been assembled prior to creating the mold.
The fiberglass owls are pulled from the mold, which are also in sections, and placed back together to produce the 10' primed white form. Bejat transports them to her warehouse studio in San Leon, Texas to paint.
Bejat paints the owls late into the hot Texas summer nights. She uses rags to simulate the feathers of the great horned owl.
